State police are continuing to investigate a fatal snowmobile crash that happened Tuesday afternoon in Cayuga County.
The crash occurred around 2:39 p.m. on Ira Station Road in the town of Victory, where a snowmobile trail crosses the roadway. Troopers said a snowmobile entered the road and collided with a town highway snowplow.
Investigators said a 2022 Lynx snowmobile operated by 49-year-old Robert Garrison was traveling west on the marked trail, which has stop signs on both sides of the road. Preliminary findings indicate the snowmobile did not stop before entering the roadway.
The snowmobile crossed the northbound lane and struck the plow blade of a southbound Town of Victory snowplow. After the initial impact, the snowmobile continued forward, hit a wooden utility pole with an attached electrical box, and caught fire.
Garrison was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where lifesaving measures were attempted. He was later pronounced dead.
The snowplow, a 2019 International Harvester, was driven by a 45-year-old man. State police said the driver was cooperative and showed no signs of impairment.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to process the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
