City officials are urging drivers to stay alert and slow down as children travel to and from school across Auburn.
The Auburn Police Department issued a public safety reminder this week, asking motorists to watch closely for children and obey school crossing guards at intersections throughout the city.
Police stressed that the safety of children comes first, especially in marked school zones where the maximum speed limit is 20 miles per hour. Officers say drivers must remain attentive at all times and follow posted signage.
Crossing guards play a key role in keeping students safe. Police reminded motorists that guards may need to stop traffic completely to allow children to cross and asked drivers to be patient during those moments.
The announcement also outlined penalties for speeding in school zones. Fines range from $90 to $600 depending on how fast a driver is traveling over the limit, with possible jail time for more serious violations. Drivers can also face points on their license, with higher speeds resulting in more points.
Police noted that fines increase for repeat violations within 18 months and that New York law requires drivers to comply with the lawful orders of crossing guards and others directing traffic.
City officials say slowing down and paying attention can help prevent serious injuries and save lives during the school year.
