A surprise presentation at a Finger Lakes school opening-day program turned into a moment of recognition for a longtime advocate for students.
State Sen. Pam Helming received the “Paying Attention to the Whole Student” PAWS Award from the Marcus Whitman Central School District. The award honors individuals who show strong commitment to supporting student success both inside and outside the classroom.
The district presented the award during its opening-day program, where Helming had earlier delivered a proclamation recognizing the work of Marcus Whitman Special Olympics leaders, organizers, and volunteers.
School Board President Sheila Brown said the district values Helming’s involvement and support of students and families across the region.
Helming said the recognition held special meaning, noting she represents more than 30 school districts across the Finger Lakes. She emphasized the importance of investing in students, teachers, and families, especially in rural and small school communities.
She said she plans to continue working to ensure students in smaller districts have access to the same resources and opportunities as those elsewhere.
