A mall rally kicked off a high-stakes Senate race in central New York, according to The Citizen. Republican Onondaga County legislator Rich McCarron launched his campaign Jan. 5 at Fingerlakes Mall, aiming to unseat Democratic state Sen. Rachel May.
McCarron, a retired sheriff’s deputy and real estate broker, is seeking Republican and Conservative backing in the 48th Senate District, which covers all of Cayuga County and most of Onondaga County, including Auburn and Syracuse. He criticized May’s votes on bail reform and the state’s push away from natural gas.
Republican leaders, including state Sen. Mark Walczyk, rallied behind McCarron, calling 2026 a chance to flip the seat after multiple GOP losses.
