ORANGE GAME DAY: Syracuse men’s basketball travels to take on longtime rival Pittsburgh (preview)

Syracuse men’s basketball (10-5, 1-1 ACC) hits the road again today at 2 p.m., taking on Pittsburgh (7-8, 0-2 ACC) at the Petersen Events Center in a matchup between longtime rivals.

The Orange come off their first ACC win of the season, a 82-72 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Sophomore Donnie Freeman scored a career-high 27 points and added nine rebounds and three blocks, while junior Naithan George contributed 17 points and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Syracuse has spread the scoring around recently, with five players connecting on three-pointers against Georgia Tech.

Defensively, Syracuse ranks as the ACC’s top scoring defense, allowing 65.3 points per game, and boasts one of the nation’s top shot-blocking teams. Senior William Kyle III leads the nation with 46 blocks, averaging over three per game, and has recorded at least one block in every contest this season. George has 23 steals and has recorded at least one in each of the last nine games.

Pittsburgh is still seeking its first ACC win after narrow losses to Miami and Clemson. Senior Cameron Corhen leads the Panthers in scoring (13.3 per game) and rebounding, while Barry Dunning Jr. and Damarco Minor provide offensive support. Pitt swept last year’s series and is coached by Jeff Capel, who holds a 7-8 record against Syracuse.

The Orange and Panthers have met 128 times since 1914, with Syracuse holding a 76-52 advantage all-time.
