Canandaigua City Council to organize for 2026, set sewer rent hearing tonight

The Canandaigua City Council is scheduled to hold its annual organizational meeting Monday night, with appointments, committee assignments and a proposed sewer rent law among the items on the agenda.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. tonight in City Council chambers at the Hurley Building, 205 Saltonstall St., with options for virtual attendance and live streaming. Mayor Thomas Lyon is listed to preside.

As part of the organizational agenda, the council is expected to review the city’s community core values, approve the Dec. 15, 2025 meeting minutes, and recognize guests.

Under items for action, the council is scheduled to consider adoption of the City Council rules and procedures for 2026, which govern meeting organization, voting order, quorum requirements and public participation. The agenda also calls for the election of a City Council president and the appointment of standing committees, including finance, ordinance, environmental/parks and planning/development.

Several appointments are listed for consideration, including designation of the city’s official newspaper, appointment of a city historian, and selection of representatives to the Business Improvement District and the Canandaigua Local Development Corporation.

The council is also scheduled to establish the time for regularly scheduled City Council meetings for the year.

One legislative item appears on the agenda in the form of Resolution No. 2026-001, which would set the time and place of a public hearing on a proposed local law establishing and imposing sewer rents in the City of Canandaigua. The resolution proposes holding the public hearing at 6 p.m. Jan. 26, 2026, in City Council chambers, with a virtual attendance option.

The agenda also includes Local Law No. 2026-001, which outlines a proposed sewer rent structure based on water consumption or measured sewer discharge, including a stated rate per 1,000 gallons and a minimum quarterly charge. The local law is listed for council consideration, with a public hearing required before adoption.

The meeting is scheduled to conclude with adjournment following completion of the listed business.
