Mets trade Jeff McNeil to Athletics

The New York Mets are parting ways with longtime infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, New York is sending McNeil to the Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Yordan Rodriguez, while also including $5.75 million in cash considerations as part of the deal.

Rodriguez, 17, spent the 2025 season pitching in the Dominican Summer League, where he recorded a 2.93 ERA over eight appearances.

McNeil’s departure closes the book on an eight-year run with the Mets. The 33-year-old was originally drafted by New York in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Long Beach State. He made his major league debut on July 24, 2018, collecting his first career hit as a pinch hitter during a road win over the Padres.

After appearing in 63 games as a rookie, McNeil quickly emerged as a key contributor. He earned All-Star selections in 2019 and 2022, highlighted by a breakout 2019 season in which he hit .318 with 23 home runs and 75 RBI in 133 games. In 2022, McNeil claimed the National League batting title after hitting .326 while appearing in a career-high 148 contests.

Over 923 games with the Mets from 2018 through 2025, McNeil posted a .284 batting average with 80 home runs and 367 RBI. The 2026 season is set to be the final year of the four-year, $50 million contract he signed with the club.
