Trade-A-Tree program returns to Cayuga County

Cayuga County residents can recycle their real Christmas trees after the holidays and get a new one started for spring.

Cayuga Recycles is bringing back its annual “Trade-A-Tree” program, which turns used Christmas trees into mulch and rewards participants with a tree seedling certificate. The program is run with the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County.

Residents can drop off real Christmas trees at the Natural Resource Center, 7413 County House Road in Auburn. In return, they’ll receive a certificate for a White Spruce seedling, available for pickup on May 8 during the Conservation District’s Spring Tree and Shrub Sale.

Organizers say the program keeps trees out of landfills while supporting county projects with recycled mulch.

Trees must be free of decorations, tinsel, wraps, and other materials. Drop-off hours are scheduled throughout late December and early January, including December 26, December 29–31, and multiple dates from January 2 through January 16.
