Tompkins County’s plan for a $50 million Center of Government building faced tough questions at its final open house, The Ithaca Voice reports.
The proposed all-electric, LEED Gold facility would be built downtown and cut energy use by 44%, but some residents criticized the price tag, location, and accessibility. County officials clarified the new building itself would cost closer to $35 million, with the rest covering renovations.
While supporters praised the energy savings and centralized services, others pushed back on bypassing options like Harold’s Square or Cornell Business Park. Construction could begin in 2027 if bids are accepted.
