LATEST NUMBERS: Power outages drop significantly across Finger Lakes

New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric say crews continued restoration work Monday afternoon after strong winds caused widespread outages across the state.

According to the companies, more than 69,000 customers were affected Monday, with about 6,701 customers statewide still without power as of mid-afternoon. Western New York saw the most significant damage, particularly in the NYSEG Lancaster Division, where more than 25,000 outages were reported earlier in the day.

Utilities said more than 500 contracted crews are assisting with restoration efforts. Crews are prioritizing reports of downed power lines and other safety hazards, followed by damage assessment and repairs to restore service as quickly as possible.

NYSEG and RG&E also warned customers to stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and assume they are energized. Downed wires should be reported to NYSEG at 1-800-572-1131, RG&E at 1-800-743-1701, or by calling 911.

Forecasters also warned that additional storms could move through the region Monday afternoon, with damaging wind gusts and small hail possible, followed by a transition to snow Monday night into Tuesday. Sustained winds near 45 mph may develop Tuesday in some areas, especially along the lakes.
