A post office in Avon will soon bear the name of a local hero who gave his life in the line of duty.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney’s bill to rename the U.S. Post Office on Prospect Street in honor of Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz passed the House unanimously this week.
The legislation drew broad bipartisan support, with nearly the entire New York delegation signing on. Tenney called the tribute “a meaningful way to ensure Officer Mazurkiewicz’s legacy lives on.”
Mazurkiewicz, who grew up in Avon, served more than three decades in law enforcement. He started with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department in 1988 and joined the Rochester Police Department in 1993. Over his 35-year career, he earned dozens of honors, including the Life Saving Award, Officer of the Month, and 32 commendation letters from the chief.
He was killed in the line of duty in July 2022.
“Officer Mazurkiewicz dedicated his life to protecting our community with unmatched courage, integrity, and selfless service,” Tenney said in a statement. “This designation ensures his legacy will endure for generations.”
His wife, Lynn Mazurkiewicz, said the honor was deeply personal.
“Tony grew up in Avon, and his parents still live there,” she said. “This dedication means that every day someone will see his name and think of him… It means the world to us.”
The post office is located at 80 Prospect Street. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
