Psilocybin rewires the brain’s mood circuits

A single dose of psilocybin, paired with a modified rabies virus, revealed how the psychedelic compound rewires the brain, according to Cornell Chronicle.

Researchers found psilocybin weakens brain loops tied to negative thought spirals and boosts connections between sensory input and action—changes that may explain its long-lasting antidepressant effects.

The study also showed brain-wide rewiring, not just localized changes, and hinted that targeting specific brain activity could guide how psilocybin reshapes neural circuits.
