A protective dune in Sodus Point grew so large it blocked residents’ lake views and sparked confusion over who was responsible for maintaining it, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
Built in 2021 to prevent flooding, the dune was left unmanaged due to village staffing issues. Residents turned to New York Sea Grant, which stepped in to mediate, gather feedback, and coordinate a maintenance plan. The dune has now been reshaped to its original size with state approval.
Officials say it will be properly maintained as a “living, breathing” barrier going forward.
