Deputies: Arrest made in $17K welfare fraud investigation

A Steuben County investigation into public benefits fraud has led to felony charges against a Troupsburg woman.

Nicole L. Trumbul, 32, was arrested Friday after investigators accused her of filing false paperwork and illegally collecting over $17,000 in welfare assistance between December 2022 and May 2024.

Trumbul is charged with four felonies: Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree, and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.

Investigators allege she submitted false documents to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and received $17,364 in benefits she wasn’t eligible for.

She was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

Sheriff Jim Allard thanked the Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the District Attorney’s Office for their help with the investigation.
