The Weedsport Fire Department is seeking new volunteers as officials report an increase in structure fires locally and in neighboring districts. The department is urging residents to consider joining while also taking steps to prevent fires.
Officials said no prior experience is required to become a volunteer firefighter.
The department said it will provide training for those interested in firefighting, supporting operations or assisting in other roles.
Recruitment materials highlight opportunities to learn life-saving skills, serve the community and be part of a team.
In addition to recruitment efforts, the department is encouraging residents to review basic fire safety practices, including maintaining working smoke detectors, avoiding unattended cooking and creating home escape plans.
Officials said the goal is not only to respond to emergencies but also to help prevent them.
The department is based at 8892 South Street in Weedsport and is accepting inquiries from prospective members.
