Chris Major announces run for Cayuga County Sheriff

A 21-year veteran of the Auburn Police Department is entering the race for Cayuga County Sheriff.

Chris Major announced Friday that he’s seeking the Republican and Conservative nominations in 2026. He says his campaign will focus on public safety, accountability, and continuing the steady leadership of current Sheriff Brian Schenck.

“Sheriff Schenck has led with professionalism and dedication, and our deputies work tirelessly every day to protect this county,” Major said. “I want to build upon that strong foundation.”

Sheriff Schenck announced in November that he would not seek re-election.

A lifelong resident of Cayuga County, Major said his priorities include supporting deputies, addressing growing drug-related crime, and making sure the Sheriff’s Office stays responsive to the people it serves.

“This is where I was born, raised, and built my career,” he said. “Running for Sheriff is about protecting the people of Cayuga County and continuing the tradition of professionalism.”
