UPDATE: Greenidge president gives statement after Sunday fire

A late-night fire forced the shutdown of Greenidge Station in Dresden after emergency crews rushed to contain the flames Sunday night.

Deputies and firefighters responded to 590 Plant Road just after 11:15 p.m. on November 23, where they found a structure fire inside the facility. The quick response by the Dresden Fire Department, with help from several nearby departments, kept the fire from spreading beyond a small area of the building.

Crews from Penn Yan, Himrod, West Lake Road, and the Yates County Office of Emergency Services joined the effort. Once the fire was out, the county’s Fire Investigation Team stepped in to look into the cause.

So far, investigators say there’s no sign of foul play. Facility staff are working with the team to figure out what sparked the fire. Greenidge Station remains shut down while crews assess the damage and make repairs.

Greenidge President Dale Irwin issued the following statement:

“Last night, there was a small fire at our facility that was quickly contained with minimal damage, no injuries, and no environmental impact due our team immediately enacting proper safety procedures and the excellent work of our local first responders. Our operations are temporarily suspended while we assess the cause of the incident, but we anticipate being back running normal operations soon.”
