Seneca County police step up patrols for Thanksgiving DWI crackdown

Law enforcement agencies across Seneca County are gearing up for a major traffic safety push this holiday weekend as part of the statewide Thanksgiving STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign.

The campaign runs from November 26 through November 30 and focuses on reducing impaired driving during one of the busiest — and deadliest — travel periods of the year.

Sheriff Tim Thompson, who also serves as the county’s STOP-DWI coordinator, said the goal is to keep roads safe as people head out to celebrate with family and friends.

“Please remember to make good decisions to keep yourself and others safe,” Thompson said.

The effort is part of a broader year-round campaign supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar crackdowns happen during other high-risk times like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Halloween.

Officials are also urging residents to download the “Have a Plan” mobile app, which helps users find safe rides and avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.

Impaired driving is entirely preventable, authorities say — and a little planning can save lives.
