Auburn man arrested after $15,000 in apartment damage

An Auburn man is facing felony charges after police say he caused extensive damage to an apartment on South Lewis Street earlier this month.

Officers responded to the area around 3:17 a.m. on Nov. 3 for a report of unknown trouble. When they arrived, they found a parked vehicle on Lawton Avenue with a broken windshield. People in the area directed police to a nearby apartment at 14 S. Lewis St., where they found broken windows, damaged doors, blood, and more destruction inside. No one was inside the apartment at the time.

Investigators later identified Jeremy T. Smith as the suspect and issued an arrest warrant. Police say the damage to the apartment was estimated at over $15,000. Smith was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree criminal mischief — both felonies.

He was arrested on the warrant on Nov. 20 and is being held pending arraignment.
