Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office warns of rising Geek Squad scam

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a surge in phishing scams where criminals pose as Geek Squad or Best Buy representatives in an effort to steal money and personal information.

These scams typically begin with an unsolicited email or text claiming you’ve been charged for a subscription renewal. Victims are urged to call a phone number provided in the message—setting the stage for the scam.

Once on the phone, scammers may ask for remote access to your computer, encourage you to download harmful software, or request payment for a fake charge. In some cases, they’ll promise a refund and then trick victims into returning “overpaid” amounts using gift cards or wire transfers.

Red flags to watch for

  • Unexpected messages about Geek Squad or Best Buy services, especially referencing renewal charges.
  • Urgent language meant to create panic and push you into acting quickly.
  • Requests for remote access to your computer or payment details.
  • Suspicious links, odd-looking email addresses, or unfamiliar phone numbers.
  • Refund scams, where you’re tricked into sending money back after a fake deposit.

The Sheriff’s Office urges residents not to respond to these messages, click on any links, or provide personal or financial information.

If you’re unsure about a charge or subscription, contact Geek Squad or Best Buy directly using verified contact information—never use the phone number or link provided in a suspicious message.

Scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Better Business Bureau, or through your email provider’s spam or phishing report feature.
