UPDATE: Lyons man ID’d as victim in fatal Amtrak incident

Authorities in Wayne County have provided an update on the fatal incident involving an Amtrak train A Lyons man was struck and killed by a westbound train earlier this week, which prompted an investigation.

Now, deputies say 47-year-old Nathan D. Derr was walking along the tracks near Franklin Street — in a non-pedestrian area — when he was hit. The collision happened just east of the State Route 14 overpass in the Town of Lyons around 4:47 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.

The train was traveling at approximately 79 mph at the time. Derr was pronounced dead at the scene.


Authorities confirmed there were 141 passengers on board the train, but none were injured.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with Amtrak, CSX Transportation, and the Office of Railroad Safety as the investigation continues.
