Senate passes shutdown deal, sends bill to House

The Senate voted 60-40 to end the record-breaking 41-day government shutdown, sending the funding bill to the House, according to the Associated Press.

The breakthrough came after a handful of moderate Democrats joined Republicans to advance the deal, despite fierce pushback from progressives over the lack of guaranteed health care subsidy extensions. The compromise delays deeper health care talks until December and reverses federal layoffs triggered by the shutdown.

House lawmakers are expected to vote as early as Wednesday. President Trump has indicated he’ll support the bill, paving the way for the government to reopen within days.
