Teens are crashing, police are frustrated, and towns are scrambling to catch up with a flood of e-bikes and scooters, according to the Times of Wayne County.
In Newark and Palmyra, police report rising accidents, reckless riding, and teens ignoring helmet laws. One teen recently hit a car head-on in Seneca Falls while riding the wrong way. Another rider crashed into a sheriff’s vehicle.
Experts warn that nearly half of e-bike injuries involve minors, but state laws haven’t kept pace. New York divides e-bikes into three classes, but local enforcement varies, and powerful models often blur legal definitions.
