Health officials issue algae bloom warning for Conesus Lake

The Livingston County Department of Health has issued a health advisory after harmful algal blooms (HABs) were spotted in several areas of Conesus Lake.

Small blooms were observed on October 27 at Long Point Park, Vitale Park, and near Camp Stella Maris. Officials say conditions across the lake are favorable for additional blooms to form.

HABs can be dangerous for both people and pets. Some produce toxins that may cause skin, eye, and throat irritation, as well as nausea, vomiting, or breathing trouble. Children and animals are especially vulnerable.

The health department is urging people to stay out of the water wherever blooms are visible. Even activities like swimming, fishing, and boating can pose risks if done too close to a bloom.

Here’s what officials recommend:

  • Don’t swim, wade, boat, or fish near visible blooms
  • Don’t eat fish caught in affected areas
  • Never drink or cook with untreated lake water
  • Rinse off immediately if you come into contact with the water
  • Keep kids and pets away from suspect zones

The county confirmed the public water supply remains safe for drinking.

HABs often appear as green-colored water or thick surface scum. Because they can come and go quickly, officials encourage lake visitors to stay alert and learn what HABs look like.
