Judge orders New York to act on climate law

A state judge just forced New York to produce long-delayed climate regulations by February, rejecting the Hochul administration’s cost concerns, according to the Times Union.

The rules—required under the 2019 Climate Act—aim to cut emissions and launch a “cap-and-invest” program charging polluters. Only one set has been proposed so far, despite a January deadline.

Gov. Hochul warned the mandates could raise energy prices and hinted at pushing for changes to the law. Lawmakers now have until February to amend the statute or let the climate rules proceed as written.
