A major infrastructure project in Ontario County is now complete, and RG&E says it will increase power reliability and capacity for more than 23,000 residents in Manchester and Farmington.
The $60 million rebuild of Substation 168 included replacing aging transformers and building a new control house equipped with updated technology. The upgrades are designed to better handle energy demands during peak summer and winter months, while improving the substation’s resilience during outages.
Work began in 2021 and focused on modernizing outdated infrastructure. The new system allows for sectionalization, which isolates issues and can reduce extended outages to momentary interruptions.
Local leaders, including Farmington Town Supervisor Peter Ingalsbe, said the additional energy capacity will be a benefit to the community.
The improvements also included updates to the facility’s design and equipment to better manage power flow between substations.
