The City of Ithaca is kicking off a full rewrite of its zoning code — and officials want help from residents to shape what comes next.
With funding from New York’s Smart Growth Community Planning Program, the city is forming a Zoning Advisory Committee to guide the two-year project. The goal? Modernize the rules around how land is used and developed — with a focus on housing, sustainability, and resilience.
“This is a chance for community members to directly influence how Ithaca grows,” said Melody Faraday, public information specialist for the city.
The new zoning code will address several big issues: boosting the city’s housing supply, supporting clean energy transitions, integrating green space, and managing floodplain development.
What the committee will do
The advisory group will work closely with city staff and consultants to review drafts, suggest improvements, and help build public support for zoning changes. Members will also play a key role in outreach — helping neighbors understand how zoning impacts everything from affordable housing to climate resilience.
Those selected should expect to attend one to two meetings per month over the next 18 to 24 months, along with public events and workshops.
How to apply
Interested residents can apply using the city’s online form at https://forms.office.com/r/h3aHDsDa56. Applications are due by Monday, November 17.
Updates on the zoning rewrite will be shared through the city’s Planning and Development newsletter, which residents are encouraged to sign up for.
