NYSEG rate hike sparks backlash in Ithaca

A proposed 35% hike in electricity delivery rates and a plan to close NYSEG’s Ithaca office drew heavy criticism at a public hearing, according to The Ithaca Voice.

Residents slammed the utility’s poor service, rising bills, and lack of promised upgrades—despite NYSEG’s parent company, Avangrid, reporting record profits. Critics warned the rate increase would burden seniors, low-income families, and climate-conscious homeowners, while also undercutting state clean energy goals.

Two virtual hearings are set for Oct. 21 as public opposition continues to mount.
