Districts across the Finger Lakes are grappling with teacher vacancies — especially in math, special education, and foreign language — but most are managing with creative staffing, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
Newark, Seneca Falls, Penn Yan, and Geneva have turned to college partnerships, recruitment fairs, and long-term substitutes to keep classrooms running. Geneva says staffing has improved since COVID, but retention remains tough due to pay and commute issues.
Marcus Whitman is a standout. Thanks to low turnover and strong programs, the district has avoided vacancies altogether and credits word-of-mouth recruiting and school pride for its stability.
