Chili cook-off fundraiser will help cancer warrior in Seneca Falls

A warm bowl of chili could go a long way in helping a local nurse fighting cancer.

Family and friends are rallying behind Sherry Brown, a hospice nurse and caregiver, who was recently diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer found in her intestinal tract. Brown, who also takes care of her elderly mother, is now facing financial strain as she focuses on recovery.

To help ease the burden, organizers are hosting a community chili cook-off fundraiser on November 1 at the Elks Lodge, 221 River Road in Seneca Falls. The event runs from 2 to 5:30 p.m., or until the food runs out.

Visitors can register as chili contestants by October 28, or simply come to taste and judge. Entry is $10 per bowl or cup, with unlimited refills on a variety of chili styles, cornbread, and drinks — including beer from a cash bar. Kids 6 to 12 are half price with a paying adult, and children under 6 eat free.

Alongside the food, the event will include basket raffles and games for kids and adults, plus a prize for the top chili based on crowd votes. Anyone who orders tickets in advance by 5 p.m. on October 28 will save $2.
