Seneca County plans full day of fall clean-up events

From recycling old paint to dropping off expired medications, Seneca County is going all-in on fall cleaning later this month.

Several community groups will team up on Saturday, October 25, for a series of public events aimed at keeping neighborhoods clean, protecting the environment, and improving public health.

Drug Take Back Day at three locations

The United Way of Seneca County’s Substance Abuse Coalition and Opioid Overdose Task Force will hold a Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:

  • Waterloo Walgreens
  • Seneca Falls Kinney Drugs
  • Ovid Kinney Drugs

Residents can drop off any unwanted, expired, or unused medications — including pet prescriptions — no questions asked. Free Deterra pouches will be available to safely dispose of patches and liquids. Sharps should be taken to hospitals or nursing homes in sealed containers, like detergent bottles.

Organizers stress that flushing medications or tossing them in the trash can contaminate drinking water.

Check your Narcan supply

The youth coalition RiSE (Resilience & Inclusion for Students Everywhere) will host a Save-A-Life Saturday at the same locations, also from 10 to 2. Community members and businesses are encouraged to check their Narcan expiration dates.

Expired Narcan will be collected and sent to states where overdose-reversal medications are harder to access.

“Expired Narcan is better than no Narcan when it comes to saving lives,” the group said.

Paint, electronics, and paper shredding

  • Paint recycling: Northeast College will host a free drop-off event from 8 a.m. to noon for both latex and oil-based paints. Businesses must follow certain limits for oil-based products. Pre-register at paint-seneca-falls.eventbrite.com.
  • Electronics and document shredding: From 9 a.m. to noon, residents can bring old electronics and confidential papers to the north parking lot of the Seneca County Office Building (enter from North Road). No registration is needed, but visitors should remain in their cars. A full list of acceptable items is at senecacountycce.org.

Volunteers needed for Day of Giving

STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions) will host a Day of Giving in Ovid, Romulus, Lodi, and Interlaken from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed for painting, yard work, and clean-up projects. To help, call the STEPS office at (315) 651-9919.
