A dangerous superbug that resists even the strongest antibiotics is spreading fast across the U.S., according to WROC. Local health experts say cases of NDM-CRE — a rare but deadly bacteria — are now being found in Monroe County after first appearing in 2021.
URMC’s Dr. Brenda Tesini says the bacteria often infects hospital patients and travelers, and can be deadly due to limited treatment options. The CDC reports a 460% national increase since 2019.
Doctors urge people to wash hands regularly and only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary.
