Warmer weather and calm conditions have triggered a rise in harmful algal blooms (HABs) on Seneca Lake, with 27 blooms reported between September 19 and 25.
Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association shared the update in its latest weekly report, which also highlights ongoing water quality projects, fall lawn tips, and a recent fundraising success.
Lake conditions at a glance

- Lake level: 445.0 feet
- Surface temperature: 67.6°F
- Turbidity: 0.53 NTU
- Dissolved oxygen: 98.5%
(Data from Sept. 22–26, provided by Pure Waters, Finger Lakes Institute, and NOAA)
Officials urge lakegoers to stay alert for signs of HABs, including green streaks, paint-like scum, or water that looks like pea soup. If spotted, avoid the water and report sightings to NYS DEC or email photos to: [email protected]
PURE Brew event raises $8K for lake protection
The Pure Waters team also celebrated the success of the PURE Brew collaboration, which raised more than $8,000 to support the group’s clean water initiatives through a local brewing partnership.
Kashong Vernal Pool Project now complete
A major restoration project in Geneva wrapped up this week. The SNPR-supported Kashong Vernal Pool and Trail Project created six shallow pools to support amphibians and reduce stormwater runoff — along with new trail segments to connect the space for public use.
Fall tips for a lake-friendly lawn
With leaves beginning to fall, homeowners are reminded to mulch, compost carefully, and limit runoff. Excess phosphorus from leaves can feed algae and harm lake health.
Lakefront makeover in Geneva
Volunteers are also helping the Geneva BID remove invasive species at Lakefront Park and replace them with native plants that benefit birds and pollinators. Community planting events are scheduled for September 27 and October 11.
