An Auburn man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a deputy sheriff while already in custody on unrelated charges, the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
Harold Calkins, 40, admitted to slashing a deputy in the head with a sharp object while being held at the county jail. The attack left the deputy with a laceration that required numerous stitches.
Calkins also pleaded guilty to criminal possession of stolen property related to a separate case involving a stolen vehicle. He will be sentenced as a second violent felony offender and faces a total of 7 years in prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. That sentence will be served consecutively to an existing parole term.
His sentencing is scheduled for January 6 in Cayuga County Court.
