A splash of color and inspiration just hit the courtyard wall at Waterloo Middle School, thanks to the creative vision of local students.

Members of the school’s National Junior Honor Society celebrated the completion of a hand-painted mural last week, showcasing heroes like Abraham Lincoln, Amelia Earhart, and Michael Jordan.
The mural was first imagined by Anna Gray, who was an NJHS member during her 8th grade year. She and her classmates wanted to create something meaningful that others could admire.
“We wanted to make something that people could look at and appreciate,” Gray said.

With support from advisors Hope Brown and Joe Demetro, the project kicked off in March. Over the next few months, 23 students sketched and painted the design after school, transforming the brick wall on the west side of the courtyard into a tribute to leadership and perseverance.
The unveiling drew several district leaders, including Principal Christal Kent, Assistant Principal Vincent Vitale, Superintendent Sarah Cupelli, and other administrators.
“It was great for them to celebrate the completion of such a big project,” Brown said. “I can’t wait to see what our current members come up with next.”
Waterloo’s NJHS chapter formed in the 2022-23 school year. It includes 7th and 8th graders who focus on the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
