Auburn schools reviewing teacher posts on Kirk assassination

Two Auburn teachers are under internal review after making controversial social media posts about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The posts drew immediate backlash from the Cayuga County Conservative Party and former Republican Senate candidate Caleb Slater, who called the teachers’ reactions “celebratory” and “unprofessional.” One of the educators was also accused of flipping a portrait of Donald Trump in a classroom setting.

Critics are demanding disciplinary action and say the posts are part of a larger pattern of hostility toward conservatives in education. The controversy has quickly gained national attention amid rising tensions over political speech in public schools.

In a letter to the community dated September 15, Superintendent Dr. Misty Slavic acknowledged the concerns and confirmed that the Auburn Enlarged City School District is reviewing the matter through its formal process.

“Personnel matters must be handled in accordance with state law, contractual obligations, and district policy,” Slavic wrote. “We are not at liberty to discuss the specifics of any individual case.”

She emphasized that the district is committed to maintaining a “safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment” and that staff are expected to model professionalism.

The superintendent did not confirm whether any disciplinary actions have been taken.

The district has opened no formal public comment process on the matter but has reiterated its focus on civility, compassion, and appropriate review procedures.
