Advocates, elected officials, and business leaders will gather this Sunday in Geneva to rally for stronger action on climate and environmental protections in the Finger Lakes — one of New York’s most treasured regions.
The event, happening Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center, is part of Sun Day, a national day of action celebrating clean energy. Organizers say it’s a critical moment to push back against weakening climate commitments at the state level.
Focused on growing regional threats
The rally will spotlight several major threats to the Finger Lakes region, including:
- The ongoing legal battle over Greenidge Generation, a gas-powered cryptomining facility on Seneca Lake
- A controversial proposal to expand Seneca Meadows, New York’s largest landfill, by 47 acres
- A push to build a large data center on Cayuga Lake, raising concerns about water use and energy demand
Organizers say these projects jeopardize clean air, safe water, and the local economy — and are urging state leaders to enforce New York’s climate laws.
Speakers include electeds, scientists, and business owners
Speakers will include:
- Assemblymember Anna Kelles
- Dr. Robert Howarth, Cornell ecologist and member of the NYS Climate Action Council
- Brady Fergusson, Climate Solutions Accelerator
- Vinny Aliperti, Owner of Billsboro Winery
- Reverend Jane Winters
- Yvonne Taylor, Vice President of Seneca Lake Guardian
Additional speakers will be announced. The event is open to the public, and interviews will be available after the rally.
