Facing looming criminal charges, the former head of New York’s state trooper union abruptly retired and turned in his badge, according to the Times Union.
Thomas Mungeer stepped down Wednesday as prosecutors worked out a plea deal tied to alleged financial misconduct during his time leading the NYS Troopers Police Benevolent Association. The charges stem from a yearslong investigation into questionable union spending and benefits practices.
While Mungeer’s retirement takes effect Oct. 1—likely before any court action—sources say that timing may protect his pension. No other former union leaders are expected to face charges.
