A police pursuit ended in tragedy Tuesday when a stolen U-Haul plunged into the Erie Canal, leaving one man dead, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase began after a reported theft at a Brockport Walgreens. Deputies tried to stop the U-Haul, but the driver fled, eventually crashing into the canal. He swam to shore and was later caught. The passenger struggled in the water and disappeared; divers later found him dead.
The incident is under investigation, and the State Attorney General’s Office has been notified.
