School’s back: Drivers urged to slow down and stay alert

As students return to classrooms across Seneca County this week, drivers are being reminded to take extra care on the roads.

Sheriff Timothy J. Thompson, Jr. says more buses, more kids walking, and more activity around schools means one thing: slow down and stay alert.

Extra patrols, more visibility

Deputies will increase their presence near schools and follow buses to help keep kids safe. The Sheriff’s Office says safety is a shared responsibility—and small decisions behind the wheel can make a big difference.

Key reminders from the sheriff:

  • Stop for school buses when red lights are flashing
  • Drive slowly in school zones and neighborhoods
  • Watch for children crossing the street
  • Be patient when buses stop frequently

“As schools reopen, we will see more school buses, more children walking, and more activity around our schools,” Sheriff Thompson said in the release. “Please take a little extra time to drive safely and keep our children safe.”
