World Canals Conference set for Buffalo this September

A major international conference focused on waterways and canals is heading to Buffalo this fall, bringing experts and attendees from around the globe.

The 2025 World Canals Conference runs from September 21 to 25 and will feature speakers from eight countries, hands-on tours of New York’s historic canal towns, and a celebration of the Erie Canal’s 200th anniversary. Registration closes September 12.

Conference highlights include a bicentennial voyage of the Erie Canal boat Seneca Chief, a public sendoff celebration at Canalside, and presentations from leaders in waterway redevelopment, engineering, and preservation.

The five-day event is expected to bring in $2 million in indirect economic impact and will give participants a close-up look at revitalization efforts along the canal corridor—from Buffalo to Fairport and beyond.
