Cooler air brings fall-like chill and lake effect rain to Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes are in for a stretch of cooler, unsettled weather this week — a noticeable shift after a string of summer heat. Forecasters say fall-like temperatures, lake effect showers, and a few thunderstorms are likely through midweek.

A taste of fall, with some thunder

A deep upper-level trough — basically a dip in the jet stream — is bringing in cooler air from Canada. Highs across the region will barely crack the low 70s Monday and Tuesday, with some spots stuck in the 60s. Overnight lows will dip into the 40s and 50s.

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms could pop up Monday afternoon, especially during peak heating. Some storms may carry small hail. The National Weather Service says stronger cells forming over Lake Ontario could even produce waterspouts overnight.

Tuesday brings more of the same: sunshine early, then a chance for rain in the afternoon and overnight. Winds from the west and northwest will keep lake effect showers going east and southeast of both Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Midweek clears, then another cold front

Wednesday starts off with some lingering morning showers, but skies are expected to clear by afternoon. Highs will hover near 70 with light northwest breezes.

A cold front moves in Thursday, bringing another round of scattered showers and reinforcing the cool air. Friday will feel more like late September, with sunny skies and a high near 67.

The weekend should bring a rebound in temperatures and more stable weather. Highs climb back into the low and mid 70s with sunshine expected both Saturday and Sunday.
