Applications now open for state law enforcement exam

New Yorkers interested in careers with the DEC, State Parks, or SUNY Police can now apply to take the state’s entry-level law enforcement exam—at no cost—through September 17.

The written test, scheduled for November, is the first step to joining teams like Environmental Conservation Police, Forest Rangers, Park Police, or University Police across the state.

150 new positions expected next year

The Department of Civil Service estimates around 150 new hires will be made statewide over the next year. Positions are available at the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Office of State Parks, and the State University of New York (SUNY).

For the first time, Park Police and University Police candidates can apply up to age 43—an increase from the previous age limit of 35—reflecting the state’s effort to expand opportunity and respond to shifting demographics. There’s no maximum age for DEC positions.

Diversity encouraged; language skills a plus

Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Some roles are available for those with Spanish or Chinese language proficiency, though a separate language test will be required if hired.

“There’s no better time to start a career that helps protect people and public lands,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “Our officers are elite, dedicated, and part of something bigger.”

How to apply

The online application is open until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 17 at cs.ny.gov/police. The exam is multiple choice and test locations will be shared with applicants via mail at least two weeks before the test.
