Waterloo man charged after purse theft, fire pit destruction and struggle with police

A Waterloo man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after police say a stolen purse was found burned in a backyard fire pit following a domestic-related dispute Monday night.

The Waterloo Police Department said officers arrested John F. Meyer, 40, of Waterloo, around 9:05 p.m. May 11 after responding to a reported altercation at a residence in the village.

Police said the investigation began after a victim reported Meyer had stolen her purse earlier in the day. Later that evening, the victim went to Meyer’s residence to recover the property, where police allege Meyer became involved in a physical altercation with another individual.

When officers attempted to take Meyer into custody, police said he physically resisted arrest. During the investigation, officers located the stolen purse and its contents destroyed in a fire pit behind the residence.

Meyer was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

He was transported to the Seneca County Correctional Facility to await arraignment in CAP Court. Waterloo police were assisted by the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.
