$5,108 Social Security payment coming August 20: See who qualifies

Social Security Checks This Week

The Social Security Administration will issue payments up to $5,108 this month for retirees who meet the strictest eligibility standards. The highest payments will land Wednesday, August 20, as part of the SSA’s staggered August schedule.

August 2025 payment dates

The SSA sends retirement payments based on your birthdate. Here’s when to expect your deposit:

  • August 13: Born between the 1st and 10th
  • August 20: Born between the 11th and 20th
  • August 27: Born between the 21st and 31st
  • August 1: For those receiving benefits before May 1997 or who also receive SSI
  • August 29: Second SSI payment due to the September 1 holiday

Who qualifies for the $5,108 payment?

Only a small group of retirees qualifies for the maximum monthly benefit of $5,108. To receive it, you must:

  • Delay retirement until age 70
  • Earn the maximum taxable income over a 35-year career
  • Have enough work credits under SSA rules

The average retiree, however, receives far less:

  • $1,976 per month for single retirees
  • Over $3,100 per month for retired couples
  • $1,537 on average for SSDI recipients

What to do if your payment is late or incorrect

If your expected payment doesn’t arrive, follow these steps:

  • Wait 3 full business days after your scheduled date
  • Check with your bank to rule out internal delays
  • Use your My Social Security account to track status
  • Contact the SSA if no deposit appears

Why your check might be smaller than expected

Since July 2025, the SSA began deducting up to 50% of monthly benefits to recover overpayments. Previously, the cap was 10%. If your check is lower than usual, this could be the reason.

What’s next for retirees?

A second SSI payment is scheduled for Friday, August 29, and retirees should also mark their calendars for October 15, when new cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) data is expected to be released.
