Pete Alonso made history Tuesday night, belting two home runs to become the Mets’ all-time leader in long balls as New York pounded the Atlanta Braves, 13-5, at Citi Field to halt a seven-game losing streak.
Alonso’s first blast, a two-run shot in the third off Spencer Strider, was the 253rd of his career, breaking Darryl Strawberry’s franchise mark. He added a solo homer in the sixth for No. 254, his 28th of the season and third in as many games.
The Mets’ offense collected 16 hits, including six home runs, and scored 13 runs, their most in a game since June 8. Francisco Alvarez matched Alonso with a pair of home runs: an opposite-field two-run shot in the second and a solo drive in the sixth, followed immediately by Brett Baty’s opposite-field blast. Alvarez also doubled in a run, finishing with three hits and four RBI. Brandon Nimmo delivered a pivotal three-run homer in the fourth to snap a 4-4 tie and end an 0-for-20 slump, while Francisco Lindor broke an 0-for-21 drought with a bunt single earlier in the inning.
Clay Holmes labored through 4.2 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and five walks. Gregory Soto worked a scoreless frame, and Justin Hagenman closed the game with four dominant innings, allowing just one baserunner.
David Peterson gets the ball on Wednesday as the Mets (64-55) and Braves (51-68) continue their series at 7:10 p.m.
