NYSEG has proposed a five-year plan to raise gas and electric rates starting May 2026, which would add about $33 per month to the average residential bill for both services, WENY reports. The utility says the increase—part of its “Powering New York” initiative—would modernize aging grid infrastructure, improve reliability, expand capacity, enhance customer service, and fund vegetation management, creating about 1,100 jobs.
Chemung County Legislator Rodney Strange is strongly opposing the plan, calling it “insane” and urging residents to speak out. He has also demanded a state investigation into NYSEG.
The Public Service Commission will review the proposal in a public process before deciding. NYSEG says spreading the increase over five years will provide stability for customers and allow for early procurement of critical equipment.
