Sheriff warns against golf carts on public roads

Wayne County Sheriff Rob Milby is reminding residents that golf carts are illegal to operate on public roads in New York, according to the Finger Lakes Times. He said slow-moving vehicle emblems don’t make them legal and stressed that the law applies statewide, not just in resort areas like Sodus Point.

Milby explained that only low-speed vehicles (LSVs) — equipped with safety features, registered, insured, and limited to roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less — can be street-legal. Driving an unregistered golf cart can lead to towing, fines, or criminal charges, especially if operated by children.

He warned that adults who allow minors to drive on public roads could face prosecution, adding, “You can tell the kids that I said it wasn’t allowed.”
