Hochul defends redistricting push, blasts GOP ‘power grab’

Governor Kathy Hochul used a Sunday TV appearance to defend her approach to congressional redistricting in New York, arguing that Republican-led efforts in other states have forced Democrats to fight back.

Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Hochul said she prefers to focus on public safety and affordability, but claimed GOP leaders — following former President Donald Trump’s lead — are using tactics in places like Texas to secure political advantage. “Texas, knock it off, we’ll knock it off,” she said. “We’re New Yorkers. We fight back.”

Hochul dismissed criticism that her party’s redistricting plans defy the state constitution, saying any changes would be put to voters. She also rejected comparisons to the 2022 court decision that struck down earlier maps, insisting Democrats followed the rules then and would do so again.

She accused Republicans of “a blatant power grab” to maintain control in Washington, tying the issue to broader frustrations over tariffs, health care, and rising costs. On immigration, she pushed back on claims that New York’s policies attract people in the country illegally, saying the state does not support open borders and cooperates with ICE on removing serious offenders.

Hochul acknowledged differences with some progressive Democrats who praised her combative stance, but said she aligns with them on making life more affordable for New Yorkers. “My job is to calm things down,” she said. “I’ll work with whoever the voters choose.”
