The New York Yankees’ push to strengthen their right-handed hitting depth at the trade deadline has quickly taken a hit, with two key additions sidelined less than a week apart.
Before Sunday’s series finale against the Houston Astros, the team announced utilityman Amed Rosario was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left sternoclavicular joint sprain, retroactive to Saturday. Catcher J.C. Escarra was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.
The Rosario news comes just after outfielder Austin Slater was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain.
Rosario, acquired from the Washington Nationals in late July, suffered the injury Friday when he collided with the right-field wall attempting to make a catch. He did not play Saturday, and tests later confirmed the sprain. The 28-year-old has appeared in just four games for New York, going 3-for-7 at the plate.
Rosario is expected to miss just 10 days, while Slater will be sidelined four-to-six weeks.
